FAQs
Why Arete? What makes you different?
Located in beautiful Burlington, VT Arete provides a robust environment for young adults to navigate the balance between school, work, and healthy living. Arete Transitions provides a young adult living experience combining support and challenge with independence and accountability. Services are designed to uncover strengths, expand capacities and hone the skills needed to lead independent lives.
Who is Arete for?
Participants are ages 18-28 who have generally completed a prior treatment setting and are now ready to transition into young adulthood while remaining in a supported environment. Arete encourages and empowers participants to develop their own course for their lives. While we provide guidance and support, participants set goals for themselves and implement individualized plans to achieve those goals.
What is the average length of stay?
On average we find 9-12 months provides participants with the foundation to launch themselves into independent living and long-term success. That said, each participant’s journey is individualized and may require a different length of stay.
What is required of participants?
Participants are expected to partner with staff to work towards mutually agreed upon goals identified by participants and their team. Participants are expected to engage with their fellow peers as well as look beyond the Arete community to build social connection and relationships. Open and honest communication will lead to a positive experience for all.
How much freedom and autonomy do participants have?
Outside of programming hours, participants are encouraged to build and foster relationships in the Burlington community. For some this may look like engaging in college courses and clubs. For others this may mean locating part-time work and engaging in feeding their passion and interests. Participants should practice advocating for their needs, desires, and identifying a plan with their team as to how to achieve success (defined by them)!
Can participants visit home?
Yes, once a participant has reached the Discovery benchmark, home visits can be scheduled! We also love when families visit their participants in beautiful VT!
What does residential life look like?
Participants live in 2-3 bedroom apartments with fellow participants. Common space is also included to provide additional opportunities to foster community. That said, Arete encourages participants to spend as much time outside of the residence as possible. Whether this be in our community loft space in downtown Burlington (.5 mile from the residence) or additional community spaces, we want participants to have an immersive and individualized experience in Burlington.
How do participants get around town?
Most participants will walk, use public transit, or bike to and from locations. Some participants can have access to their own personal vehicle at a later benchmark.
What is your substance use policy?
We ask participants to remain free from using substances (including alcohol) during their time with us.
What is your policy on technology?
We want participants to have access to technology during their time with us, to best equip them for the future. Participants’ access to technology will grow during their progression through our benchmarks.
Can participants get a job?
Participants are highly encouraged to locate part-time employment during their participation in the program. Volunteer work is a great option too!
Can participants take college courses?
Participants are highly encouraged to participate in academics during their time at Arete. For some this may involve online courses and for others this may mean attending in-person courses at a local college.
What are the expectation of families?
Arete believes in partnering with our participants as well as their families. Most families begin engaging in weekly therapy integrated with their child to strengthen ties and maintain open lines of communication. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance and will be an area we navigate over the course of a participant’s stay with us.
Do you accept insurance/what is the financial commitment?
The clinical portion of our services have the potential to receive reimbursement through insurance. We can provide support in navigating this process. To figure out what Arete would cost for you please connect with our admissions team.
